NZのGDP成長率は予想を上回り、緩やかな回復基調が続く 

ニュージーランドの第1四半期のGDPは前期比0.2％増となり、昨年の第4四半期の0.1％減から回復した。エコノミストは当初、今年の第1四半期の成長率をゼロと予想していた。過去6四半期のうち2四半期はプラス成長となり、景気回復の兆しを見せている。 

プラス成長の原動力となったのは特定の産業であった。産業別では、公共事業は2.9%増と、2023年第4四半期の0.2%増から急上昇した。芸術・余暇その他のサービス産業もプラスに動き、前期の0.9％減から0.3％増となった。また、小売業は前期の0.7%減から0.2%増と小幅回復した。一方、卸売業は前期の1.8%減から緩やかながら0.3%減となった。 

全体として産業別の伸びはまちまちで、16業種のうち半数が拡大した。特に賃貸、雇用、不動産サービス、電気、ガス、水道、廃棄物サービスでの伸びが目立った。ニュージーランドのGDPは年率換算で0.3％増となり、前期のマイナス0.3％から大きく回復した。同国の経済は緩やかな上昇基調を回復しつつある。

水曜日、ニュージーランド準備銀行のチーフエコノミストであるポール・コンウェイ氏は、インフレ率を目標水準に導くことに成功したと述べた。雇用市場の冷え込みがインフレ圧力の緩和につながった。しかし、コンウェイ氏は、インフレの進展が予想より早くなることも遅くなることも考えられるし、確信を得るには制約的な政策期間が必要だと強調した。GDP統計の時点で、米ドルは弱い小売売上高を背景に下落し、投資家は利下げへの期待を再燃させ、NZドル対米ドル相場は0.613付近まで反発した。
