27日に行われた自民党総裁選挙は、石破茂氏が僅差で勝利したため、円高が進んだ。ドル円相場は1ドル＝142.12円まで1.88％上昇し、142.09円であった。週間では、ドルは対円で1.25％下落し、円は4週間ぶり3度目の上昇を記録した。

日本の石破茂新総裁は9月29日、脆弱な景気の回復を支えるためには金融緩和政策を維持しなければならないと述べた。石破茂氏はこれまで日銀の積極的な金融緩和政策を批判してきたが、今回の発言がよりハト派的なスタンスを示しているかどうかはまだ不明だ。 

経済政策について石破茂氏は、物価上昇による経済への影響を緩和するため、特に低所得者世帯を支援するための対策パッケージを早期に導入すると述べた。選出された後、石破茂氏は、金融政策は全般的に緩和基調を変えることはしないが、現在のゼロ金利に近い日本の金利をさらに段階的に引き上げることには反対しないと述べた。8月の演説で石破茂は、マイナス金利を終了させるという日本銀行の決定を支持し、金融政策のさらなる正常化を支持し、それが産業の競争力強化に役立つと主張した。
