日本の国内総生産（GDP）は昨年第3四半期に0.8％減少し、第4四半期に0.1％増加し、当初予想の0.1％減少を上回り、減少傾向から反転した。わずかな上昇に過ぎなかったが、日本が予想された景気後退への転落を回避する一助となった。注目点は、第3四半期には0.1％減少した資本的支出が意外にも2.0％増加したことである。 

さらに、貿易黒字が好影響をもたらし、輸出は2.6%増と、1.7%増にとどまった輸入を上回った。しかし、経済の半分以上を占める個人消費は、残念ながら3四半期連続でマイナス0.3％の縮小となった。国内需要は、物価と世界経済の不透明感によって落ち込んだ。 

政府支出は予想以上に減少し、予想の0.1％減に対し0.2％減となった。この前、第3四半期の政府支出は0.3%増であった。同様に、公共投資も予想の0.7%減に対し、0.8%減と大幅に縮小した。公共投資はすでに第3四半期に1.0%減少していた。 

最新の統計は、日本銀行が近い将来利上げに踏み切るかもしれないという憶測を強め、一部の投資家は3月の利上げに賭けている。日銀の金融政策を決める政策委員の１人、中川順子審議委員は最近、日本経済はインフレと賃金の上昇という好循環の軌道に乗っていると述べた。米連邦準備制度理事会（FRB）が利下げを急がないため、米ドルと米国債利回りが低下し、その結果、日本の円高が進んだ。日本円は対米ドルで強含み、147円の大台を突破し、1ヶ月以上ぶりの高値をつけた。
