欧州中央銀行（ECB）は4月の理事会でインフレ対策の方針を継続し、政策金利を歴史的な高水準に維持すると決めた。主要政策金利は4.5％、中銀預金金利は4％と、いずれも22年来の高水準を維持した。インフレは減速しており、コア物価と賃金の伸びも鈍化しているにもかかわらず、同行はサービス価格の上昇圧力と不安定さを理由に警戒の必要性を示唆した。 

利下げの見通しについて、ECBは、インフレ率が目標である2%に向けて順調に収れんするという確信が強まるなら、金融緩和が適切になると表明した。ラガルド総裁は、今後の政策金利決定はデータに基づいて行われることを強調し、中央銀行はあらかじめ設定された方針に従うことを約束せず、変化する経済情勢に動的に対応することを選択すると強調した。 

ユーロはECBの政策金利決定後に下落し、ユーロドルは1.07を割り込み、約2ヵ月ぶりの安値をつけた。木曜日の欧州株式市場は売り圧力にさらされ、ユーロ・ストックス50は0.7％下落し4週間ぶりの安値となる4,966を記録、より幅広い構成銘柄をカバーするストックス欧州600指数は0.4％下落し、504で取引を終えた。最も打撃を受けたのは銀行セクターで、ウニクレディト(UniCredit)、スペインビルバオ・ビスカヤ・アルヘンタリア銀行(BBVA)、サンタンデール銀行(Santander)を含む大手銀行が3％近く下落した。
